1: As a sign of respect ,calpurnia begins to call jam 'mister jem' because he was growing up and becoming more of an adult.

2: scout realized that there was some skills involved in being a girl.

3:she was miserable because dill wasn't coming for summer.

4:its is a metaphor, this basically means that the governor is trying to say that it is necessary to maintain and update the workings of the government.

5:shadrach was a game .jem and scout tied Eunice Ann Simpson to the furnace which would have been incredibly hot and told her to have faith.

6:No I wasn't, calpurnia has been there from the birth of both children and basically grew them up .

7: scout Mark's jem as coloured blind because jem makes the fashion mistake of trying to wear a green tie with a blue suit.

8:calpurnia speaks differently in her church because it would aggravate the people there if she spoke the way she does among white people. For instance I speak common language among my friends using slang etc but when I speak to someone of higher status I speak using proper English.

9: the church is used by the coloured folks for church service while during the week days white folks use it as a gambling spot.

10: Enamored - this shows that aunt Alexandra cares about scout and her family

1.Calpurnia is referring to jem as 'Mr.Jem because he is no longer a child and therefore is changing his behavior.
2.When calpurnia invites scout to the kitchen and scout saw that there is a skill in being a girl.
3.She is too smart for her own good.
4.The quote is a metaphor. In order to maintain a boat or ship, the barnacles must be scraped off.The ship of state.in this case, refers to the state government. The governor is saying that it is necessary to maintain and update (scrape a few barnacles off) the workings of the government (the ship of state).
    5. Shadrach suggest to the story in the old testament in which shadrach, meshach and abendnego are thrown into a furnace for refusing to bow down and worship gods other than the God of Israel.Because of their faith, the three dont burn up in the furnace's fire.
Jem suggest to shadrach as he and other unsupervised Sunday school students tie Eunice Ann Simpson to a chair and leave her in the church's furnace room, then forget about her.Jem tells her she wont burn if she has enough faith, reference to shadrach that perhaps suggests the children had just learned and were enacting a version of this story.in any case, evoking shadrach was a good explanation for leaving Eunice down they will put the blame on her lack of faith if she got burned.
6.No because I wasn't surprised that calpurnia refers to jem and scout as "my children" because calpurnia is much greater than just cooking and cleaning for the finch family.Calpurnia is largely responsible for teaching scout and jem about what it means to be a good person in the context of the community around them.
7.Although bad eyes are a curse of the finches',literally jem is not colour blind ,although scout jokingly calls him that after jem makes the fashion mistake of trying to wear a green tie with a blue suit.however ,jem does not prove to be colour blind when it comes to his views of black people and justice for all.
8.Calpurnia speaks differently in her church because it would annoy the people there if she spoke the way she does among white people members would think she was "putting on airs",trying to act better than them. Two situations in my life where I would speak differently is to people and depending on if I am speaking to a toddler
9.Cal's church is unpainted inside and out ,and there is no electricity. It serves as a spiritual gathering place for calpurnia and her congregation
    10. I think it simply means that aunt Alexandra loves to sit on the porch

    (9) The role of the church in calponia community is a place of wership and only allows black African Americans,it serve as a spiritual place where people gather to sing songs of worship, the church had no money for hymnals and few of the parishioners can read,so they sing by echoing the words that zeebo calpurnia's oldest son and the town garbage collector read from their only hymnal.

  11. English B Assignment- Kaelene John- 4E

    1. Calpurnia calling Jem Mister implies that Jem is growing up, he is no longer a child and therefore is changing his morals and behaviour. Jem is treating Scout differently, instead of telling Scout to stop being a girl, he is telling her to behave more like a lady. So it shows a sense of growth and maturity.

    2. I think that Scout is starting to realize that there’s more to a lady than just weakness and being fashionable.

    3. I think that Scout meant that she was at unease for two days because Dill was not there. It also shows that she missed him very much.

    4. In order to maintain a boat or a ship, the barnacles must be scraped off. The ship of state, in this case, refers to the state government. The governor is saying that it is necessary to maintain and update (scrape a few barnacles off) the workings of the government (the ship of state). Metaphor: The use of the term ship of state compares government to a ship by equating the two things. ... Barnacles clinging to the sides of a ship don't interfere with its operation or purpose.

    5. Jem alludes to Shadruch as he and other unsupervised Sunday school students tie Eunice Ann Simpson to a chair and leave her in the church's furnace room, then forget about her. Jem tells her she won't burn if she has enough faith, a reference to Shadruch that perhaps suggests the children had just learned and were enacting a version of this story. In any case, evoking Shadruch was a good rationale for leaving Eunice down there—it put the blame on her lack of faith if she got burned.

    6. No, I was not surprised because she was Always there for the children giving them good advice in some cases and so on.

    7. Although bad eyes are a curse of the Finches, literally Jem is not color-blind, though Scout calls him that (in Chapter 12) after Jem makes the fashion mistake of trying to wear a green tie with a blue suit. Cal is quick to make him change the offending tie, and "his face flushed angrily" after Scout's comment. Metaphorically, however, Jem does prove to be color-blind when it comes to his views of black people and justice for all.

    8. This is the basic premise behind Calpurnia's explanation for why she speaks differently when she is at her church than when she is at the children's home. Calpurnia explains that she doesn't want to seem like she is "puttin' on airs", so she changes her speech to fit into her surroundings. I speak differently depending on my surroundings, when I’m at home I speak in broken English whereas when I travel to different countries I speak standard English because the people over there won’t understand the way I speak if I’m speaking broken English.

    9. Church serves as the only place of worship for Maycomb's Negro population. It visibly represents the poverty of the local inhabitants: The church is unpainted inside and out, and there is no electricity. It serves as a spiritual gathering place for Calpurnia and her congregation.

    10. The word used to describe Aunt Alexandra is “enamored” in the edition we are using for our main resource but “enamored” in the hard cover. What do you think is meant?
I think it meant to be filled with love or admiration for..so it shows that Aunt Alexandra loves her family and she is loved by her family.

    1. Calpurnia reffers to Jem as "mister Jem" because it is a sign of southern respect and its a right of passage for Jem because he is growing up and becoming more of an adult.

    2. The fact that there are skills in being a girl, makes being a girl attractive to scout.

    3. Scout stayed miserable for two days because Dill was not coming for the summer.

    4. To scrape a few branacles off the ship of state(metaphor) means that its necessary to maintain and update the working of the goverment.

    5. Shadrach was one of the three in the book of Daniel who were told to bow down and worship another god. Jem and the other unsupervised sunday school students tied Euinice Ann Simpson abd live her in the church furance room, so that if she has enough faith she would not burn. A reference to shadrach.

    6. No, because calpurnia been with jem and scout for a very long time, calpurnia waa close to them since she was like the mother figure. Soiys like her children.

    7. Jem is not blind but he makes a fashion mistake by trying to match a green tie with a blue suit.

    8. Calpurnia changed her language when speaking to different groups because it would aggtavate the the the people there if she speak how she would amoung the white people, members will think she is putting on airs trying to act better that them.

    9. The church serves as an hold place for worship for maycomb negro population. It visibly represent the poverty of local inhabitants, the church is unpainted inside and out and there is no electricity. It serves as an spiritual gathering place for Calpurnia and her congrgation.

1.By calling Jem “Mr. Jem” she shows that she acknowledges that he is growing up and becoming a young adult.

2.Being a girl became attractive to Scout while she was watching Calpurnia work in the kitchen. She came to the conclusion that there was some skill in being a girl.

3.After Scout said “she stayed miserable for two days” I concluded that she was sad that Dill wasn’t coming and that Jem’s mood towards her changed. As a result, she was left with nobody to spend her time with thus becoming miserable.

4.The figure of speech “Scrape a few barnacles off the ship of state” is an idiom which is used by the governor as a way of saying that it is necessary to update and maintain the workings of the government.

5.Shadrach was one of three men in a story from the Old Testament who were thrown in a furnace for not worshiping other gods other than the God of Israel. Jem and his fellow unauthorised Sunday school students tied Eunice Ann to a chair in Calpurnia’s church’s furnace room and told her that as long as she has faith she would not get harmed (reference to the story of Shadrach).

6.I was not surprised that she referred to them as her children because she serves as the mother-figure in the Flinch household ever since Jem and Scout’s mother passed away. Calpurnia has not only been cooking, cleaning and washing for the Flinch family but has also served the role as an educator and advisor for Jem and Scout.

7.The Finches are known for having bad eyes so it is ironic that Scout made fun of Jem and called him colour blind when he made the mistake of wearing a green tie with a blue suit.

8.Calpurnia changed her language from the proper English that she speaks at the Finch household to her mother tongue (broken speech) while she was at church because she didn’t want to offend the other coloured folk at the church or to seem posher than they are. My speech here Grenada when talking to my family and friends is broken and much different from my dialect when I visit other countries to enable persons to hear and understand me better.

9.Calpurnia’s church serves as the only place of worship and spiritual gathering for the coloured folks.

10.The word enamored means to be filled with a feeling of love for someone or something. This shows that Aunt Alexandra cares about Scout and the other members of the family and began to think of their home as hers.

1.When Calpurnia refers to Jem as "Mister Jem" she was acknowledging the fact that he was getting older and experiencing changes associated with growing up entering adolescence.
2.I think that the fact that girls being a girl had its skills was a major role in why Scout suddenly thought girls were attractive.
3.From the sentence "I stayed miserable for two days" I think that that Scout really misses Dill and was looking forward to his arrival for an extended period and since Jem did as he pleased she probably had nobody to play or spend time with so she was probably lonely.
4.The figure of speech "Scrape a few barnacles off the ship of state" means that the governor said that it is necessary to maintain and update the workings of the government.
5.Shadrach was one of the 'three young men' who consisted of him Meshach and Abednego. They were from Judah and was thrown into a furnace after refusing to worship a statue of Nebuchadnezzar II. They exited the furnace unharmed and was addressed as 'servants of the most high god'. Eunice Ann was tied to a chair and placed in a furnace room as an allusion of Shadrach.
6.I wasn't surprised that Calpurnia called Jem and Scout her children because she has been in their life for a long time carrying out not only tasks like cooking and cleaning but also helping them to further their learning. Also, since their mother passed Calpurnia has been like a mother figure for both children. She had grown to think of them as her own children.
7.Although Scout called Jem colorblind he isn't colorblind but was labelled so because he decided to green tie with a blue suit. Therefore it is ironic as Finches are cursed with bad eye.
8.Calpurnia changes her language when among different groups because she does not want to seem as if she was better than anybody. When in her church she spoke differently so she would not aggravate the people there. If she spoke the way she did among whites the members would think she was "putting on airs". Two instances where I change my language would be at home and school. At home I speak Grenadian Dialect but at school if I have a presentation to give i easily switch into Standard English for my classmates to understand and to be graded.
9.Calpurnia's church plays a big role in the society as it was the one which accepted the coloured members of the society. It gave them a place to worship and praise their gods.
10.Enamored is to be filled with a feeling of love for. I think that Aunt Alexandra really loved and cared for her family and was already felt at home at their places.
