Stanza 1: in the first stanza, the starting of the poem “they use to laugh with their hearts and eyes but now they only laugh with they teeth while their ice block cold eyes search behind my shadow” this phrase tells us that there is a change in the way people act showing that their laugh use to be genuine and heartfelt. However, their attitude has changed. The idea of “laughing with their teeth'' illustrates someone's interest. On the other hand “ice block cold eyes”is showing us that there is know emotion of feelings in the action.

Stanza: 2: tells us that all good intentions have gone.Everybody is only focusing on their own personal gain. The use of metaphor emphasizes how there is lack of trust as everybody is trying to use each other.however, the phrase of empty pocket means he is stripped of all genuine happiness and has been left feeling empty and alone.

Stanza 3: Okora shows the change in him as a man.”i have learned to say,too.\ to say “good bye” when i mean good residence meaning i don't want to hear from you again.

Stanza 4: Gabriel Okara said in the second line of stanza 4”I have learned to wear many faces”for different occasions. He went on saying some of those occasion and faces;office face, street face etc...Then he finally goes on to say '' like a fixed portrait smile” which indicates that all faces never change and is like a smile fixed for its own occasions. This stanza has been focused on how people tend to change their facial expressions for different occasions and how for each occasion people tend to have a different smile.

Stanza 5: the poet started out stanza 5 by signifying that he also has adapted to the environment around him.He then says “to laugh with only my teeth, which suggests that he has also learned how to laugh without happiness and to laugh only for the sake of laugh. The write even went on saying “i have also learn to say goodbye when i mean good riddance .\ and to say glad to meet you without being glad, this demonstrate that now he has also learned to say goodbye in a nice way,and not mean it in a good way at all.as he says, when i mean good riddance. He now says gladly to meet you without being pleased as he says, after being bored meeting the person. However, the writer is saying that there are known true emotions in his words and feelings.

Stanza 6: The poet describes how he used to feel.it seems like he is talking to a child or a young man,who has not yet experienced the change of heart who has not yet been influenced by the environment and the society in which he lives. In the first line in stanza 6 the poet says,”but believe me son”. Emphasizing with regret,”i want to be what i use to be”.\i want to unlearn all the muting things, this line described his description to go back to his old innocent ways, where he felt life was simple and his emotions were honest.

Stanza 7: in The last stanza he want the son to show him how to regain this lost innocence.

Stanza 1: In this stanza, the speaker says that they used to laugh with their hearts and their eyes which means they laughed genuinely and heartily but now they laugh for the sake of laughing and not genuinely while looking right past him with their ice-block-eyes.

Stanza 4: He is saying to his son that after witnessing what he has he has learned to wear faces for different occasions just like how they would wear dresses, his facial expressions and smiles would change just like a fixed portrait.

Stanza 5: The speaker says that he has adapted to these ways he says things without meaning it for instance when he says 'It's been nice speaking to you' even though it hasn't been, he is saying there are no emotions in his words and when he laughs for the sake of laughing just like how they did to him.

Stanza 6: He tells his son that he wishes to go back to how everything was when he was his age before he learned all 'these muting things' as he refers to them and also relearn how to laugh, for his laugh in the mirror shows his teeth like a snake's bare fangs.

Stanza 7: He is asking his son to show him how to be genuine and happy again like he was when he was his age.

Paragraph: The speaker in this poem is saying that they used to laugh with their hearts and their eyes which means they laughed genuinely and heartily but now they laugh for the sake of laughing and not genuinely while looking right past him with their ice-block-eyes. Moreover, people used to shake hands willingly and out of joy but now they shake hands without any joy while their left hands search through his pocket looking for valuables to steal, but his pockets are always empty. He was also told 'feel at home' and 'come again' by people but after coming once and twice and making himself comfortable there can be no third time as the doors are never open to him the third time, which goes to say that they don't mean what they say. Here the speaker is saying to his son that after witnessing what he has he has learned to wear faces for different occasions just like how they would wear dresses, his facial expressions and smiles would change just like a fixed portrait. He says that he has adapted to these ways when he was influenced by it, he now says things without meaning it for instance when he says 'It's been nice speaking to you' even though it hasn't been, he is saying there are no emotions in his words and when he laughs for the sake of laughing just like how they did to him. He tells his son that he wishes to go back to how everything was when he was his age before he learned all 'these muting things' as he refers to them and also relearn how to laugh, for his laugh in the mirror shows his teeth like a snake's bare fangs. He is asking his son to show him how to be genuine and happy again like he was when he was his age.

Stanza 1. The first line suggests that this poem is going to be based on a story. The speaker is addressing his son, so this could well be a father beginning to explain how things used to be, how people 'they' used to laugh with their hearts and eyes. Back in the past. However, nowadays, people laugh with their teeth and not of a pure heart, almost as if they’re seeking for something. So the present is being judged by the past and by the looks of it the speaker rather the past and shows that there is a negative change presently.

Stanza 2. The way people shake hands in the past to now has also changed for the worst. In the past a greeting was genuine, persons use to accept persons as they were but now persons shakes hands based on their status (financial status). Nowadays persons are shaking hands to see if they get something in return.

Stanza 3. People invited persons to their home making you feel like you’re somewhat important but however if your status isn’t on point you’re not invited again. It shows how persons now are artificial and only focuses on your outward appearances and not the person him/herself. Also the change in culture.

Stanza 4. This fourth stanza describes how the speaker himself had to change and learn in order to comply. He uses a comparison - faces to dresses - to highlight the various personas he took on, all the while smiling.

Stanza 5. He also became adapted to the false handshakes and pearly smiles plus he knows how to trick people with his farewells and welcomes and fake politeness.

Stanza 6. But he is unhappy being a conformist. He wants to regain a former innocence he son has. He doesn’t want to be part of this new culture.

Stanza 7. He comes with little or no pride. He wants the son to show him how to get back this lost innocence. How to laugh and smile like in the old days when he was young and carefree and the culture encouraged openness and honesty a pure identity.

Paragraph. “Once upon a time”, is about a man who has experienced a negative change in his country’s culture. However he is unhappy about it and doesn’t want to be part of it. He then explains to his son about “how persons use to shake hands genuinely” but now persons shake hands depending on the status of the individual. Also, he goes on to say that individuals in the past, smiled with their hearts but now smiles with only teeth and of a bitty heart. The man is not happy about all of this change but he is however stuck and adapted to the negative changes. He finally asked his son “to show him to regain his innocence and get back to the old way of doing things.”
